Installing or reinstalling the operating system will usually uninstall, or at least break, most programs previously installed on the computer. Programs usually have to be reinstalled after a new installation of the operating system. While data files can usually be backed up proactively for a situation like this, program files are not usually able to be backed up in a usable state for restore.
