What can I do to speed up my Windows computer

The perception of slow speed on your computer could come from possible different sources, but two of the more common situations are referenced here.

If your computer seems slow particularly when you are on the internet, the problem might have something to do with your internet service itself, and not necessarily the computer. In these situations, you can run a speed test to see if you are getting the expected level of service coming in to your computer. If the issue seems to be with internet speed, it may be best to speak with your internet provider about available connection speeds and other issues. See our article on how to run an internet speed test: http://www.microcenter.com/tech_center/article/9793/how_to_check_internet_speeds_with_a_speed_test.

If the issue seems to be with the computer itself and not the internet specifically, you can try to disable programs and services from loading at startup or running constantly to see if that helps with the speed. This process does not delete any of these items from the computer, it just means they will have to be opened manually to be used. To disable programs from starting automatically, see our support article: http://www.microcenter.com/tech_center/article/9067/how_to_perform_a_clean_boot_in_windows_10. Take note that the article shows how to disable everything - it may be beneficial to selectively choose certain items to keep running, for example your antivirus program or printer utility, once you have determined if this process is helping the situation.

If you are able to rule out the internet itself as the problem, and software troubleshooting does not provide noticeable improvements, at some point it may be necessary to consider if there is a hardware problem causing the perceived slowness. At that point, it is recommended that you seek assistance from the Micro Center in-store service department for hardware troubleshooting.
