Q: How do I connect to the internet?
A: Computers have two ways of connecting to the internet, using a physical cord to a router, or a wireless connection. The router is then connected to a modem which communicates with an internet Service Provider to provide the computer with access.

Q: What is an internet Service Provider?
A: An internet Service Provider, also known as ISP, is a company that facilitates connection to the internet by connecting multiple end users using their own cables and wireless methods.

A: Browsers are programs on a computer used to view information on the internet. Common programs include Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari.

Q: How do I know if I am connected to the internet?
A: Windows computers have an icon that shows the status of the connection:

  • A screen with a wire – indicates the computer is using a cable connection
  • A Screen with a yellow triangle – indicates a problem with the wired connection
  • A Screen with a red X – indicates the computer is not connected with a cable

Q: Can I change my IP address?

A: Check for flashing lights next to the cable. If they are not flashing try a different port on the router, unplug it and plug it back in to ensure it is secured.

A: If other devices can access the internet, the computer may be having a driver related issue. This can be reinstalled in Device Manager.

Q: Why is my internet slow?
A: Several factors can be involved, first check other computers to see if the speed is the same. Next try using an ethernet cable to directly connect to the router. Check if you have multiple programs trying to download information simultaneously that may be slowing each other down. When other computers have the same speed, check with your internet provider for any known issues.

Q: How do I check my internet speed?
A: Websites such as speedtest.net or one provided by your internet provider can be used to check the speed of your internet connection.

Q: Why is someone elses internet faster than mine?
A: Speed can be determined by the internet Provider; Each company may have multiple speed packages that can be purchased. Certain times of day can also play a role. You may share a junction box with other customers in your area. If everyone is trying to connect at the same time, your ISPs connection may become congested.
