How to set up a Hotmail or Outlook Webmail Account with Microsoft Outlook

Description: This article will show you how to set up a hotmail.com or outlook.com email account in Microsoft Outlook. This example uses Microsoft Outlook 2019, however the steps are similar for ealier versions of Outlook 2013 and 2016 as well as current versions of Outlook 365. Note: When it asks for your username, your username is your full hotmail.com or outlook.com email address.

Standard Setup Instructions

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook, select File and then Add Account.

  2. Enter your email address and then choose Connect.

  3. If prompted, enter your password again, then select OK and Finish.

Alternate Setup Instructions when using two factor authentication - do this first

  1. Browse to https://outlook.com, sign in, select your initials in the upper right, and then select My Account.

  2. Under Security, select More security options.

  3. Scroll down to the app passwords section, and then choose Create a new app password.

  4. Your app password will be displayed on the next screen. Make a note of this password, as you will need it when you add your account to Outlook.
  5. Use the instructions at the beginning of this article to add your account to the Microsoft Outlook program app, but when Outlook asks for your password, enter your app password that you obtained here.
