How to run Disk Defragmentation in Windows XP

A disk defragmentation rearranges items stored on your hard disk in a more logical manner to allow programs to run faster. This guide will walk-through how to run a disk defragmentation in Windows XP.

  1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
  2. Select the Category view. The Control Panel may already be in Category view.
  3. Click the Performance and Maintenance link.
  4. Select Rearrange items on your hard disk to make programs run faster.
  5. Select the C: drive.
  6. Click the Defragment button.
  7. Click Close when completed.
