How to remove and reinstall iTunes on Windows 7

In some instances, it may be necessary to uninstall iTunes and the related software that is installed with it. Your iTunes purchases and music are stored in the My Music folder on the computer and will not be removed. It is recommended that you back up the music and folders for safe keeping.

  1. Open the Control Panel from the Start menu.
  2. Double click on Programs and Features or the category Programs » Uninstall a Program.
  3. Uninstall the following Programs:
    • iTunes
    • Quick Time
    • Apple Software Update
    • Apple Mobile Device Support
    • Bonjour
    • Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
  4. After the removal of Apple Software is completed, you should verify all of the folders and files have been removed.
  5. Searching for the items listed below will verify this. This is the list of the files and folders for the 32-bit version of Windows 7.
    • C:\ Program Files\Bonjour
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple
    • C:\Program Files\iTunes\
    • C:\Program Files\iPod\
    • C:\Program Files\QuickTime\
    • C:\Windows\System32\QuickTime
    • C:\Windows\System32\QuickTimeVR
    The files or folders you may find on the 64-bit Windows 7 operating system are listed below.
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\iPod\
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\QuickTime
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\QuickTimeVR
  6. Make sure you delete all of these files or folders if you find them on the system.
  7. Restart your computer. Then, download and install your iTunes and associated software.
