How to troubleshoot a Computer Not Booting Up to Windows

Description: This article will provide steps for troubleshooting the problem of a computer stuck at a manufacturer's logo screen on boot up.

Problem: When you turn on the computer, it will stop at the logo screen for the manufacturer, showing only the logo for your Compaq, E-machine, Dell, Lenovo, Sony or PowerSpec computer. The computer eventually will boot up to windows after five minutes or more.

Resolution: The problem may be that the computer is trying to access an external storage device before booting up into windows. Computers are defaulted to search for an external storage device on boot up. They can boot to this device and allow you to copy the data off from your internal hard drive or try to repair a problem with windows on the internal hard drive.

Many external devices have storage areas on them: an external hard drive, memory cards from cell phone, printers with memory slots, usb flash drives, a camera, or even a keyboard with usb ports on them.

To make sure it is not this problem, turn off your computer. Hold the power button down for 10 seconds, and then release it. Disconnect all the devices that are listed above from the computer then power on the computer. If the computer boots up to the windows desktop, reconnect all the devices back to the computer.

To overcome this problem, boot your computer into setup or BIOS (check your computer manual for this procedure). Look for an entry labeled USB Legacy Device and set it to disable. Look for another entry for Boot device, remove or disable the option for booting to USB. Save and exit setup, the computer will restart on its own. The computer should now boot up to windows with any device attached to it.
