New Computer or Monitor Shows Only a Cursor when Turned On

Description: This article will provide steps in troubleshooting the problem of a new computer or monitor showing only the background and an arrow for a cursor.

Problem: Your new desktop or monitor only shows you a blank window with an arrow for the cursor on the display. There is no start bar, no icons, or any error messages when the desktop boots up.

Resolution: This problem can be a result of having two video cables connected to the new desktop and to the monitor. Only one cable should be connected from the computer to the monitor for display. Your desktop video card has multiple video ports; this allows the desktop to use multiple monitors.

First, the desktop needs to be shut down. So, you want to hold down the power button for 10 full seconds (even if the display goes blank before then). This will power down the desktop, remove one of the cables from the computer and the monitor. If you have a cable that has ends that are blue, it is recommended to remove that cable. This is a VGA cable and compared to other connections that are possible, this has the lowest quality. Now lightly press the power button to turn the desktop back on. Allow the computer to boot backup normally, now the desktop and all the icons should be seen on the monitor.

If the use of a second monitor is desired, shut down the desktop normally, reattach the second video cable to the desktop, and plug the other end into the second monitor. Power on the monitor, turn on the computer, and allow the desktop to boot up into windows normally. You will want to consult your user’s manual for the desktop to enable the second monitor to be active inside windows.
