How to format an External Hard Drive or Flash Drive in OS X

Description: This is a how-to article on the topic of formatting devices in OS X.

  1. Click on the Finder icon at the bottom left of the desktop window.
  2. Click the Application button on the left side of the finder window.
  3. Click the Utilities folder at the bottom of the applications page.
  4. Click the Disk Utility icon.
  5. Highlight the device that needs to be formatted. The device will vary in name depending on what kind of device it is.

After highlighting the device that needs formatted:

  1. Click ERASE.
  2. Select the file system - IMPORTANT - MS-DOS WILL ALLOW YOU TO READ AND WRITE IN WINDOWS AND OS X MAKING THIS THE MOST RECOMMENDED CHOICE.
  3. Name the device.
  4. Click ERASE at the bottom right to format the drive. This will prompt to verify the format. Click Yes. Now the freshly formatted device is on your desktop.
