What does SmartScreen Filter do in Internet Explorer 10

SmartScreen Filter detects phishing websites, websites that attempt to acquire information such as username, passwords, and credit card information by misleading themselves as a trustworthy website. SmartScreen can also protect you from downloading or installing malware. As you browse the web it scans the website and determines if there are any characteristics that might be suspicious, SmartScreen checks the website against a list of reported websites that are deemed phishing websites. SmartScreen also checks your downloads against a list of reported malware programs and blocks them from downloading.

How do I turn SmartScreen on or off?

  1. Open the desktop version of Internet Explorer 10.
  2. Click on Tools.
  3. Click on Safety.
  4. Click Turn off SmartScreen Filter, then choose to turn SmartScreen on or off.
  5. Click OK to save your settings.
