How to reset a Passcode or Device Disabled Message on iPad

Description: This technical article will show how to reset a forgotten passcode or device disabled after enter the wrong passcode on your iPad.

If you have entered the wrong passcode 6 or more times you will see the following message on your screen:

  • iPad is disabled

Now if you have previously synced your device with iTunes, you may be able to reset the passcode by restoring the device.

To restore you would do the following:

  • Connect the iPad to the computer with which you normally sync and open iTunes.
  • If the iPad is still disabled, or if iTunes does not automatically sync your iPad then you will need to manually sync with iTunes.
  • If you have chosen to encrypt your backup, it will contain the passcode. You will want to disable backup encryption before restoring.
  • When the backup and sync is complete, you will select Restore from Backup and choose the most recent backup.

An alternative method to the above is to place the iPad in recovery mode and restore it to erase the iPad:

  • Disconnect the USB cable from the iPad, if you currently have it connected to the computer.
  • Turn off the iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for several seconds until the red slider appears, then slide to turn off device.
  • While pressing and holding the Home button, connect the USB cable to the iPad. It should automatically turn on.
  • Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
  • iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. You will click OK and choose to restore the device.

One final method to restore is to use Find My iPhone to Remote Wipe the iPad, if you have it enabled. Then you can restore from an iCloud backup, if again you have iCloud enabled.
