What is RAM

RAM (Random Access Memory) or just "memory", is a data storage module on a computer. Typically seen in multiple DIMMs (dual in-line memory modules),  "sticks" or "chips", it is plugged into a computer's motherboard RAM slots. This type of data storage houses data for the computer's CPU, or processor so that data can be accessed quicker. RAM is sometimes confused with storage space on a hard drive.

RAM is one component of the computer that affects performance or speed. Upgrading RAM is one way to improve your computer's response time and help the CPU access data faster.  If a user receives an error message about memory, it is not necessarily referring to the hard drive, but that there is not enough RAM to complete a function. Data stored in RAM is volatile, meaning that once the power is removed from the system, any data stored in the RAM will be lost.

There are several types of RAM available today. Most commonly, the RAM is found in DDR, DDR2, or DDR3 SDRAM (double data rate synchronous dynamic random access memory). It is important to note that RAM types are not cross-compatible. When upgrading a RAM module, check the manufacturer's specifications before purchasing memory.

DIMMs also come in double and triple channel architecture. Like different DDR types, dual and triple channel are not compatible; triple channel memory will not work with dual channel memory.
