Dell XPS 8900 Series BIOS Update February 2016

Description: There has been some customer feedback recently indicating a scenario where the Dell XPS 8900 computer will unexpectedly lock up or crash with what is referred to as a blue screen error or BSOD. The reason for this problem has not been readily apparent when this happens, but this behavior is not normal or expected. Dell engineering has recently provided a BIOS update for the XPS 8900 Systems, known as BIOS version 2.1.3 dated February 5, 2016. It is recommended to follow the instructions provided by Dell to install this BIOS update on affected XPS 8900 Systems. While there are other enhancements listed along with this BIOS update, it has been tested to improve and resolve the scenario with the unexpected lock ups or system crashes.

Affected Models: Dell XPS 8900 systems manufactured prior to February 2016.

BIOS Update and Instructions: Provided on Dell's Technical Support Site. Instructions indicate most users will install this update from within the Windows environment on the affected PC, though instructions are also offered for alternative installation methods if necessary.

Summary: Customers who have an affected Dell XPS 8900 computer should go to the above link, download the BIOS file, and follow the instructions provided further down on that page. It is recommended to print out a copy of the Dell instructions page for reference purposes as a BIOS update will eventually require a system restart as part of the process.

Warning: While the steps outlined are not particularly difficult to perform, it is important that one is comfortable with doing this process before proceeding. Incorrectly flashing the BIOS on a computer could render the computer system board unusable. If you are not comfortable with following these steps it is recommended that you seek the assistance of a qualified service technician before proceeding. When a computer is otherwise working properly, it is not recommended to flash the computer's BIOS without specific guidance or recommendation from a qualified service technician.
